Welcome to the website of the Behavioral Measurement Engineering Laboratory at the Faculty of Fisheries Sciences, Hokkaido University. The laboratory is led by Associate Professor Komeyama.
Our laboratory studies fish behavior in the wild and in aquaculture systems. We use underwater cameras, image analysis, artificial intelligence (AI), and Bio-logging to monitor fish behavior. Our goal is to better understand fish behavior in fisheries and aquaculture and to develop practical technologies that contribute to sustainable fisheries and aquaculture.
Fieldwork is an important part of our research. We regularly visit fishing ports, aquaculture facilities, coastal areas, and research vessels. Laboratory members collect field data, measure fish, operate underwater cameras, and record environmental conditions. After field surveys, we analyze the collected data using computer vision, statistical methods, and AI techniques. Our research covers a wide range of topics, including fish behavior, fish schooling, body size measurement, growth analysis, and fish welfare. We also collaborate with fishing communities, aquaculture companies, government agencies, and research institutes to solve real-world problems.
Our laboratory is ideal for students who enjoy fish, fieldwork, outdoor activities, and data analysis. We welcome motivated students and researchers who are eager to learn both fisheries science and advanced technologies.

Prospective Students
We welcome motivated students who are interested in fisheries science, aquaculture, fish behavior, computer vision, and image processing.
International applicants usually join our laboratory first as Research Students (non-degree students) for six months to one year before entering a master’s or doctoral program. If you would like to join our laboratory, please send your CV, academic background, research interests, and a short message explaining why your research interests match our laboratory and why you would like to join us.
Our laboratory currently has many graduate and undergraduate students. Therefore, the number of new students we can accept is limited. Thank you for your understanding.
